WA Good Food Guide's Wine of the Year 2024

Introducing the WA Good Food Guide's Wine of the Year, Best Single Vineyard Wine and Best Regional Wine (Margaret River): The Deep Woods Estate 2022 Single Vineyard G2 Cabernet Sauvignon 2022! The judges said:

"This 2022 Deep Woods ‘G2’ Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a profound wine, one that speaks eloquently of both Margaret River and of its variety. In a line-up of the top 50 wines in Western Australia, it stood head and shoulders above the rest for its exacting balance of supple fruit and pliable tannin. It is fresh and detailed and delivers the uncompromising experience that is singular to great cabernet sauvignon. The warm, ideal conditions of the 2022 vintage in Margaret River, expressed via this cooler site, put the final feather in its cap. This is a wine to collect and to cellar, but most importantly, it is a wine to drink and enjoy. What a thrill it is."

WA Good Food Guide's Producer of the Year 2024

Speaking on selecting the Producer of the Year 2024, MC and judge Mike Bennie said:

"If you were to judge 270 wines with their labels revealed, you’d surely attempt to award an array of regions, producers and varieties, so that a little bit of everything got a little bit of something. It is a natural tendency, and it’s why wine shows – which are judged blind – will often display extraordinary clean sweeps by some producers. Sometimes, it’s just your year, your show, your week. There’s an unpredictable beauty in that. This year, the dominance of Deep Woods Estate was undeniable. With two of the top five wines, and a total of three wines in the Top 25, the judges were left with little choice but to award Deep Woods with a thoroughly deserved Producer of the Year award. The bigger the company, the taller the poppy, and when it comes to tall poppies and wine awards, Deep Woods is one of the loftiest in this country."

WA Good Food Guide's Winemaker of the Year 2024

Deep Woods Estate Chief Winemaker Julian Langworthy was also awarded Winemaker of the Year 2024. MC and judge Mike Bennie introduced Julian and said:

"Across all, his wines seriously delivered the goods. He is a busy guy, a clever guy and once even declared himself the 'Prince of Pink' for his prowess of Rose. He's our winemaker of the Year, ultimately a deserving winner - Julian Langworthy!"

Congratulations to the whole Deep Woods Estate team including Chief Winemaker Julian Langworthy, Senior Winemakers Emma Gillespie & Matt Buchan and Chief Viticulturist John Fogarty, as well as the Evans & Tate team on these incredible awards.

We would also like to extend our congratulations to all of the wineries awarded last night. Western Australia is producing world-class wines, and we are excited to be a part of such an exciting region.

Deep Woods Estate 2022 Single Vineyard G2 Cabernet Sauvignon

Number 1

"Inky, bold and highly aromatic with mulberry, cassis, bay leaf and a distinctly saline, nori-like tang. Deeply concentrated with excellent palate saturation of plump, vibrant fruits managed by persistent powdery tannins. Freshness and elegance underscore the vivid texture, making it a beautifully poised expression of the region’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon."

Deep Woods Estate 2023 Cabernet Franc

Number 4

"Western Australia is producing some of the country’s best Cabernet Franc right now, and never is this more obvious than when drinking the 2023 Deep Woods Estate Cabernet Franc. Leading with loads of leafy cassis, sweet tobacco and raspberry, the palate is shaped by savoury, spicy and lacy tannin. Everything works in harmony here – the fruit is tucked into the folds of chalky texture, and while being varietally bang-on, the wine also provides pleasure in its jubilant, juicy way. A ripping Cabernet Franc. Super exciting."

Evans & Tate 2020 Redbrook Estate Chardonnay

Number 11

"A distinctive Margaret River Chardonnay, offering rich complexity and vibrant freshness. Bold flavours of pear and juicy peach are balanced by pristine acidity. There are nuances of toasted grain and nougat, with subtle flinty minerality. The palate is incredibly long and expressive with a carefully managed balance of fruit weight, savoury complexity and al dente texture. Fruit quality, experience and site speak volumes here. The Evans & Tate legacy is strong."

Deep Woods Estate 2024 Single Vineyard Albariño

Number 24

"We don’t see a lot of great Albariño of distinct varietal character here in Australia, and this one stood out for all the right reasons, beckoning us with its summery air. Green apples and pears, loads of white spice and crunchy phenolics to back up the plush entry. Another impressive wine from the Deep Woods team in Margaret River."
