Why You'll Love This Wine

"This is a super special wine – the second ever release of our G2 Cabernet Sauvignon, with fruit sourced from the unique Gibb Road Vineyard, Block "G2".  This block is a relatively steep west facing slope with deep ironstone rich gravels. It's late ripening, despite the warm nature of this site, and produces powerful, expressive detailed Cabernets. Inky dark in colour, the nose exhibits briary dark fruits, cedar like spice, nuanced by ferrous minerality. The palate is powerful, structural, and has amazing procession and length. A wine for the decades."
Chief Winemaker, Julian Langworthy

Tasting Notes

Colour

Inky dark in colour, with bright crimson / purple hues.

Aroma

The nose exhibits briary dark fruits, cedar like spice, lovely, lifted cassis which is nuanced by ferrous minerality.

Palate

The palate is tightly wound and coiled with beautiful fine-grained tannin and a refreshing crunchy acidity. The seamless, fine boned nature of this wine presents elegance and class which lifts the pristine fruit profile of this variety.

Cellaring

Delicious now, but this wine will age for at least 15 years.

Technical

Vintage

2022 was a truly exceptional vintage in Margaret River. The season started beautifully with a wet spring and late flowering, followed by a warm and dry season, producing refined flavour, great elegance and personality.

Winemaking

The Deep Woods Single Vineyard wines exemplify the diversity of Margaret River’s distinct subregions. This single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the unique Gibb Block 2 Vineyard in the Treeton subregion of Margaret River’s southeast. This block is a relatively steep west facing slope with deep ironstone rich gravels. It's late ripening, despite the warm nature of this site and produces powerful, expressive and detailed Cabernets.

The vineyard is a low crop, dry, cool site. Grapes were fermented over 14 days before being pressed to tank and then racked to barrel (30% new and remainder 1–2-year-old French oak) for 18 months maturation.

Reviews

Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate, November 2024

The 2022 G2 Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon hails from a single west-facing site on Gibb Road in Margaret River. Aromatically, the wine is all raspberry and cocoa powder, dried herbs, asphalt and cold tea. In the mouth, the wine blossoms in a plume of chewy tannin. It is floral, medium-bodied, elegant and pliable, with a flow of ductile tannin and red-hued fruit. This is a superb wine that marries site, vintage and maker in one seamless package and is a wine immune to hyperbole.

James Suckling 2024

The nose is deeply perfumed and enticing with lifted aromas of blackcurrants, wild blackberries, potpourri and cedar. The medium- to full-bodied palate has seamlessly integrated tannins and focused acidity, giving complex notes of blood plums, blueberry bush, iodine and black olives. Very restrained and pretty with an underlying power. Sophisticated.

WA Good Food Guide Wine Awards 2024

Inky, bold and highly aromatic with mulberry, cassis, bay leaf and a distinctly saline, nori-like tang. Deeply concentrated with excellent palate saturation of plump, vibrant fruits managed by persistent powdery tannins. Freshness and elegance underscore the vivid texture, making it a beautifully poised expression of the region’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Sauvignon from Deep Woods is nothing short of monumental, representing a collection of wines that exude greatness and deserve the highest distinction. The ‘G2’ is a quintessential example of modern Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaret River, demonstrating a level of craftsmanship that speaks volumes. What sets the ‘G2’ apart is its immediate drinkability; the wine’s freshness and alluring perfume are compelling, while its powerful concentration delivers immense satisfaction with every sip. The tannins are masterfully managed, offering a structured and framed palate experience. This wine has the potential to age gracefully, rewarding those with patience; however, its shiny, vivid fruit and modern, stylish feel make it incredibly hard to resist now. Simply put, it’s insanely delicious.

Aaron Brashers, The Real Review, October 2024

Youthful in the glass, bright and vibrant. Complex and lifted aromas of dried herbs, blackberry, bramble, dark cherry, bay leaf and a whiff of menthol. Youthful, tightly bound and full of cassis, mulberry and satsuma plum. There's lovely brightness and vitality in the flavours, all crunchy, snappy and structured. The tannins are granular, textured and layered and the acidity delivers ping and zip. A medium to full bodied cabernet that brings so much archetypal 'Margs' to the table.

Leads with a wonderful nose which includes blueberry and blackberry fruit. The resolved tannins and oak add supporting structure and mouthfeel, but do not impede the flow of the fruit in the slightest. Superb drinking and so, so long. Yes, it should age, but honestly, I would not bother as it is such a good drink now.

So much Cabernet, so little time, Deep Woods have blocks all over the place and they're all of such good quality, eastern states growers must be weeping into their Riedels. If variety wasn't the spice of life, you could just drink WA and be happy.
